Numeracy in Term 3

Fractions

During the first four weeks of term, our numeracy focus was fractions

Our key learning intentions were:

-How can we compare and order fractions?

-How can we solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions with the same or related denominator?

-How can I work out a fraction of a quantity?

-How can I make connections between fractions, decimals and percentages?

One activity students completed, was to collect 100 coloured Unifix blocks, and then work out the fraction, decimal and percentage of their collection.

Chance & Probability

During weeks 5-6 of term, we worked on chance and probability

We were learning to:

-explore, name and predict probabilities.

-compare expected and observed frequencies.

We played lots of chance games to explore probability including SKUNK, greedy pigs & heads and tails. You will get the opportunity to play these games and more, at our Classroom Expo this term. One key learning we took away, was that we can use probability trees to reliably and accurately display all possible outcomes of chance events.

Shape

During weeks 7-9 of term, we are focussing on 2D and 3D shape

We are asking our students to:

-name, identify and describe the properties of 2D and 3D shapes

-explore translations, reflections and rotations of 2D shapes in the cartesian plane

-construct simple prisms and pyramids

Our favourite activity to explore these questions, was our "What Shape Am I?" challenge. Students wrote clues about a 2D and 3D shape for other students to guess. The clues were ordered from most difficult (applies to many shapes) to the easiest (applies to only one shape). Can you guess what shapes are described below?
