Exploring self portraiture

Year 10 students in our Art Industry class, have been researching the art of the self portrait in the context of the Art Industry and learning about acrylic painting techniques. 

The class looked at artists such as Frida Kahlo, Vincent Namatjira, Brett Whitely, Chuck Close, Kaylene Whisky, Albrecht Durer, Pablo Picasso, Artemisia Gentileschi, Gustave Courbet, Paul Gauguin, Jean Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Lucian Freud, Gehard Richter,  and Yayoi Kasuma. They researched these artists' work in the context of their lives, and analysed how they painted their portraits, the ideas they were trying to convey and the aesthetics of the work.

Students then went ahead and gathered images which would help them in their portraiture and created a number of rough sketches. They then practiced a number of tonal studies before beginning to create their own Acrylic Self Portrait.

Students have been expressive in their selection of colour and mark making and created wonderfully successful reflections on themselves.
