Jerome Rush. Holding up the Sky

Exhibition opening 7 September at Sol Gallery, Brunswick Street.

"Holding up the Sky aims to reflect upon the juxtaposition between nature and man-made forms, and the importance for humankind to become in touch with their essential, natural selves. The images contrast the smooth flowing organic forms of the eucalypt with the geometric, machine made, architectural constructions of the buildings.

The magpie, as a major focus in the exhibition acts as a symbol of defiance against the ‘progress’ of humankind. The magpie is a beast that when treated inappropriately will swoop and peck at its targets. But when treated appropriately this intelligent cognisant bird will be a willing and able partner in a celebration of the world we live."

Jerome is an Art teacher at Northcote High School.

Young Workers community legal centre

The Young Workers Centre operates a free, accredited community legal centre for young workers, aged 30 and under in Victoria who need advice or assistance with any workplace issues.

Since its inception in February 2016 the small team of lawyers have supported young workers in Victoria to recover over $2 million in compensation.

Why might a young worker contact the Young Workers Centre?

  • To check they are being paid properly
  • To find out what they should be being paid in the first place
  •  They are experiencing workplace harassment or bullying
  • They have been unfairly dismissed from work
  • They haven’t been receiving superannuation
  • They are being discriminated against at work

RIJI – Help required

Our Year 10 students are participating in Inner Northern local Learning and Employment Networks (INLLEN) Real Industry Job Interview (RIJI) program this year. RIJI is a work readiness program that assists students in developing good job search, resume writing and interviewing skills. The program is delivered as part of a school’s curriculum throughout a series of guided lesson plans and concludes in a face-to-face interview with a local volunteer interviewer during a RIJI event.

The RIJI program is a real community effort and would not be possible without the participation of schools, service providers and local employers. We are seeking volunteer interviewers for the Mock Interview events and would love some families and friends from our local schools and communities to get involved.

The mock-interviews will take place on the following dates:

Darebin Schools:

17th / 19th of October

Darebin Arts Centre

If you would like further information on the RIJI program or would like to volunteer at our mock interview events, please contact RIJI Coordinator Janelle Barnard on jbarnard@inllen.org.au.
