The environmental damage created by our disposable society

As part of VCE VM Literacy, students have been investigating, analysing and creating content advocating for an issue of their choice. Here Lincoln Farquhar shares some of the ideas behind his digital artwork 'Insignificant'

This work is a self expression piece that details the increasingly inevitable collapse of society which is currently being driven by the saturation and normalisation of disposable, single use items.

The life cycle of plastics, personal technology, packaging, clothing, and jewellery is too limited. Our collective ability to best utilise our finite resources is reduced by the attraction to convenience. Corporate influence is deliberately designed for commercial gain, and single-use items are the corner stone of these modern day conveniences.

What would have once been a valuable item that took hours to make by hand, can now be industrially produced hundreds of times per minute, converting it from an invaluable scarcity to an insignificant negligence that when discarded, only contributes to a declining world.

My piece describes how futile this self destructive lifestyle is, while aiming to bring forth new ideas in the reader about how they decide to lead their life, and whether or not they wish to contribute towards the insignificance of the world.
