Welcome to Term 4!
We have planned for an exciting term this term in the library, including device-free days, crafting and gaming.
We are missing the Year 12s and wish them the best of luck for their exams and future endeavours.
Readers have diverse reading motivations including escapism, creative inspiration, understanding perspectives, personal development and habit. Knowing the motivation of the reader can help with book selection.
BookTok is a TikTok sub-genre hashtag that explores reading and books, influencing readers around the world. The hashtag, #BookTok phenomenon is used by book lovers in TikTok. Videos feature people sharing their bookshelves, book reviews and book reactions. It highlights the different motivations of readers, aiming to have people connect and share their personal reviews of books. It has not only influenced books and reading, but also sales, with many publishers around the world, seeing their highest book sales in years. The main users of BookTok are women between the ages of 12 and 25 years.
If you have a chance, explore the many BookTok posts for Young Adults, to gain ideas for what is available and reviews of books. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to email me rachel.hodge@syd.catholic.edu.au and we will try to add it to our collection.
Many of the English classes are exploring the Dystopian genre this term. Dystopia is a popular genre for many reasons as it allows readers permission to be scared and unsure. Readers also can recognise patterns in the real world, understand and identify social evils and hold onto hope in hopeless scenarios.
Ms Forwood’s Year 8 English class visited the library to choose a Dystopian novel. Since we have so many, the library was turned into a book speed dating cafe, with music, flowers and book “dates”.
The students had 30-45 seconds to rate the book by first impressions (the cover), small talk ( the back synopsis), and deep conversation (the first few pages). Most students left with a book date!
Common sense media have created this infographic to remind people about digital citizenship. Common sense media https://www.commonsensemedia.org/ is a non-profit organisation with expert and objective reviews on the content and themes of movies, TV shows, books, games, podcasts, YouTube videos etc especially those focused on the young people audience.
Happy reading and enjoy term 4!
