This week in Maths, we are introducing Fractions to the students.


VOCABULARY

Fraction: 

A small part or proportion of something.

Denominator:

The number of parts that a whole object or collection is divided into. It is shown by the number below the line.

Numerator:

The number of parts being referred to. It is shown by the number above the line.


ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Draw three models of fractions - these can be shown as a pie, a bar, on a number line, part of a collection  or an array. Ask you child the following questions:

What is the whole?

What are the parts?

How many parts are there?

 

Ask your child if they can show you fractions from the “Halving Family”:

Halves, quarters and eighths.
