CURRICULUM FOCUS

This week in ReadingGrade 3 students will be beginning our learning about inferring texts.

VOCABULARY

Inferring texts: Inferring means working out something that the author means but doesn’t explicitly say. Inferring uses text cluesdialogue and prior knowledge to ‘read between the lines’. Inferring adds more meaning to the story.

Text clues: The meaning is hinted at but never directly stated.

Prior knowledge: We use all that we know about the world and apply that when we read.

Dialogue:  Conversations between characters.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Ask your child to use a fiction book (from home or from their reading satchel) to make an inference about a character.

Ask your child to look at the characters' actions in the story.

What inference can we make about the character based on how they behave?  For example, a wise character will think things through. A brave character will face their fears to overcome.
