STUDENT ACTIVITIES

Fred Kemp at Cricket Camp!

Last week I was very lucky to be able to travel to Sydney for a 5 day player development cricket camp with Century Cricket. I stayed in Katoomba in the Blue Mountains where the weather was hot for a few days and then we battled against the rain and cold. I did a lot of drills to improve my batting, bowling and fielding with the coaches Dan and Clarkey as well as being involved in game play.

I played in a 40 over game and we won by two wickets on the last ball. I got 1/11 off 4 overs when I was bowling and made 8 runs. The next day I played in a T20 game and got 1/20 off 3 overs with my bowling. I was batting in the final pair and was 8 not out. We needed 3 runs off the final ball to win. I was at the non striker's end when my team mate was going for a 4 and his shot hit my bat for a single! We lost the match by one run.

The highlight of the week was going to Cricket Central the home of NSW cricket and watching a Sheffield Shield match between Queensland and NSW. I met Australian opener Usman Khawaja and got a selfie and his signature. It was a great week!

School Mural Project

Chilwell have been lucky enough to work with Norm Stanley and Nikki Mckenzie from Wurrikiart to create a permanent mural on our BER building. Made possible by generous funding from The Geelong Gallery and the ‘School Murals Project’, it celebrates the perspective of our First Nations people.

The mural has been co designed by the Grade 6 students after exploring what connects them to place and country. There is the Barwon River, the ocean, gum trees and the large red circle is the Chilwell community. The circles along the river represent the five languages of the Kulin Nations.

We’ve been practising: Wadawurrung, Woiwurrung, Tungwurrung, JaJawurrung and Boonwurrung. Please follow the link below to enjoy this short video about the project...

Basketball - Lightning Premiership

On Friday the 6th of October students from our Boys & Girls Teams travelled to AWA stadium to play a series of games for the divisional round of Lightning Premiership basketball. There were many schools there with a bunch of talent, both teams competed well and persevered throughout the day managing to win 2 out of the 4 games each.

In the end both teams came third overall, we all tried our absolute hardest though, and while doing it everyone had a huge amount of fun. There was no way we could've had that much fun without the massive help that, Mr C and Mrs Kasper gave for helping coach on the day.

In more basketball news; Chilwell would also like to congratulate Archie Sleep for being selected for the Victorian Country team at the Southern Cross Challenge. The Southern Cross Challenge (SCC) is the beginning of the high-performance pathway for identified athletes, coaches and officials. A Basketball Victoria initiative, the tournament is positioned to aid the development of those identified, providing an opportunity to take part in an elite tournament setting against other competing states.
