Term 2 Week 6
With the recent increase in COVID-19 activity, influenza (flu), and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infections it is important that the Kinder and School take steps to reduce the spread of disease by ensuring all staff and children wash and sanitise their hands regularly, cover their nose and mouth when they cough or sneeze, and that we are using air purifiers and maximising external ventilation. Staff and children should stay up to date with flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, stay home if unwell, and consult their GP or Nurse on Call.
This week the whole school engaged in a buddies session. Students watched a story called “Bowerbird Blues'' which showcased a beautiful bird who collected special blue objects. This was a part of the National Simultaneous Story Time event, hosted by the Australian Library. Lots of discussions were had about things that were special to the students and then each different year level created a different craft inspired by the story. Students always value the time with their buddies, and this was seen again in this session! We are looking forward to our next session which will happen in Week 10 of this term.
We held our Open Day and tours last Saturday, which was a such a great opportunity to showcase everything that we do at MPRPS&K.
Thank you to all of our Kinder teachers, Al, Emily, Amelia and Jane and the School Leaders - Oscar and Wendy, Saumya and Ava and Erin and Mr Shaw for sharing their expert knowledge and engagement with our visitors.
Congratulations to 5/6FL on an amazing presentation both in person and through video of their writing work. Students shared their Slam Poetry and the rules of how to create Slam Poetry.
See the examples below:
This week we have met with families and students that are being supported through our Program for Students with Disabilities and require additional support or adaptations to support them in the learning, with an Individual Education Plan.
Yesterday, Mount Pleasant Road Primary School was very excited to have author and TV presenter, Adrian Beck, visit our school to facilitate Writer’s Workshops as part of our school’s Enrichment Program.
Adrian has created books including Fox Kid, Dereck Dool, Furball, Little Legends, Speccy-tacular, Kick it to Nick and many, many more!
Adrian worked with small groups of students from Years 1-6 and shared his sources for inspiration as well as his approach to creativity. He began each workshop outlining his journey to becoming a successful author and illustrator and discussed the challenges and celebrations he faced along the way.
Students focused on strategies that can help them to generate interesting and creative ideas to build stories, such as using overexaggerated personal experiences, using literary devices (alliteration, rhyme, etc) to make a compelling title with a story to follow and - the student’s favourite - mashing two separate ideas to make an even better idea to inspire a story!
We thank Adrian Beck for working with our students who are excelling in writing. Students left Adrian’s workshops feeling inspired and determined to extend their writing skills and think creatively about their writing!!

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
The dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.
Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.
