Year 1/2 Learning Reflection

Weeks 6 & 7

We are excited to share the wonderful experiences our Grade 2 students had during their recent visit to the Botanic Gardens on Wednesday, May 22nd. This special outing allowed the students to reconnect with the gardens and engage in artistic activities inspired by the natural world around them.

The day was filled with enriching activities guided by the knowledgeable staff at the Royal Botanic Gardens. Our students spent time observing the beauty of nature, using watercolours to capture their surroundings, and exploring the unique “Arid Garden,” which is home to a fascinating variety of cacti. They even got a peek inside a cactus and learned about its structure.

One of the most exciting parts of the visit was playing detective to find hidden cross sections of cacti embedded in the garden paths. The students created beautiful rubbings from these cross sections, which they were thrilled to share with us.

Here are some highlights and reflections from the students:

  • “Making the cactus rubbings in the arid garden.”
  • “The cactus sculpture was cool.”
  • “When we were drawing and painting what was around us.”
  • “We had to notice things.”
  • “We saw the biggest tree ever!”
  • “I loved seeing all the big trees.”

The visit was not only educational but also an inspiring way for the students to express their creativity and deepen their appreciation for the natural world. We look forward to more such adventures in the future!

1A were excited to borrow and browse through non fiction books we found interesting in our school library.

We enjoy our daily fluency (partner reading) time. Reading out loud to a friend and listening to a story is not only fun but great for our reading fluency. 2B Enjoyed researching about an animal of choice and then presented our findings in a fun and creative way. Please come and read out wonderful flip books!

We are learning about Procedural Texts. We had the experience of making jam sandwiches. We thought carefully about the steps involved in making the sandwiches. The final step was the most important- Eat the sandwich!  :-)

1B have been enjoying learning about sustainability for our Unit of Work. We have made flip books about different ways we can care for our earth and reduce our impact.

We have also enjoyed practising reading in a clear, smooth voice with our partner.
