Year 4- The First Fleet Excursion

Last Friday, the Year 4s had an amazing incursion about the First Fleet. The First Fleet was a group of 11 ships that sailed from England to Australia in 1787.It was really interesting to learn about the journey and what happened when they arrived.

The ships carried convicts, soldiers and supplies. The people on the ships faced many challenges, like rough seas, limited food and long months at sea. The convicts were people who had committed crimes in England and were sent to Australia as punishment We learned about the youngest and the oldest convicts, even one lady, Esther Abraham, who was sent to jail for 7 years for a crime she didn’t even commit!

We learned about the impact on the Aboriginal people who already lived there. The arrival of the First Fleet changed their lives dramatically. They faced new diseases and had to share their land with the newcomers.

During the incursion we completed 3 workshops. We made love tokens for a loved one, we learnt a new game called ‘Ngaka, Ngaka’ which means ‘Look, Look’ (very similar to Tic, Tac, Toe) and we also made some homemade spice.

The incursion was really fun for everyone and connected with what we have been learning about in the classroom.

Check out some of the photos below. You may not recognise some of our classmates who had the opportunity to dress up as some of the First Fleet explorers!
