Feedback on Student Learning

Reports, Learning Tasks & Parent Teacher Interviews

Brinbeal Secondary College provides parents with a range of ways to stay informed about their child's progress. With today being the last day of Semester One we are publishing reports and wish to introduce parents to our ongoing reporting moving forward.

Learning Characteristic Reports

The fourth and final Learning Characteristic Reports for Semester One has been published and can be found in the Reports tab on Compass. These assess 5 key characteristics of good learning:

  • Arriving to class on time
  • Being prepared to learn
  • Displaying a positive attitude towards learning
  • Working cooperatively with others
  • Completing set tasks and meeting deadlines

Learning Characteristic Reports are published every five weeks.

Learning Tasks

Throughout the semester students have completed a number of assessments in each subject. These are published on Compass as Learning Tasks prior to the assessment to inform parents and students of upcoming assessment. On completion of the task, teacher assess the student work and record the result on Compass to provide students and parents with regular feedback throughout the year.

Feedback will be provided in two parts:

  1. Victorian Curriculum Descriptor: This is a teacher judgement of the standard of work completed and linked directly to the Victorian Curriculum. Students are assessed as being "Below the Expected Level", "Working Towards the Expected Level", "At the Expected Level" or "Above the Expected Level".
  2. Teacher Comment: This is a short paragraph which provides students and parents with feedback on what the student achieved, how they worked throughout the task and an area for improvement.

Please note: due to being a new school we have been evolving our processes and structures throughout this semester. Not all Learning Tasks from this current semester have the Teacher Comment. From the end of this term onwards, all Learning Tasks will have a comment from classroom teachers. Parents are encouraged to regularly review their child's Learning Tasks to obtain continuous feedback on their progress.

Semester Reports

Semester reports can be read and downloaded from the Reports tab on your child's Compass profile as of 1:30 on the 28/6. Semester reports at Brinbeal Secondary College contain the following information:

Victorian Curriculum Progression Points: This semester the reports show your child's current progress as assessed across the Victorian Curriculum F-10. Students achieving at an expected level for half-way through Year 7 will receive a progression point at 6.5. For semester-based curriculum areas, Materials, Food and Digital Technologies, Performing Arts and the Humanities strands of Civics and Citizenship and History, students who are achieving at the expected level will have a progression point of 7.0. This is because they only participate in the subject area this semester.

Learning Task Results: The assessments undertaken by students are collated in the Semester Reports so that parents can view the progress made throughout the semester.

Attendance: The percentage attendance for each subject is displayed on the subject report page. Attendance plays a significant role in student achievement and the College has an expectation that students have an attendance over 90% in all subjects.

Mentor Group Reports: These reports provide students with feedback on their Personal and Social Capability and Ethical Capability. Students were also asked to reflect on their achievement for the semester and identify areas for improvement for the upcoming semester. The self-reflection has been added to the reports as written by your child.

Event Participation: Brinbeal Secondary College values extra-curricular activities and the way they complement academic life.  Your child's involvement in these activities is collated in the report.

Learning Characteristic Reports: All four Learning Characteristic Report cycles have been collated into a graph for each subject. This allows you to identify changes to your child's attitude towards their learning over the course of the semester.
