Acting Principal's Message
20 Year Celebrations
This week we have been celebrating the 20 year anniversary of the opening of Mater Dei. These celebrations culminate on Friday, 7th of June, where staff from Kildare and Mater Dei Catholic Colleges will celebrate mass together at the Cathedral. Following the Mass and morning tea, staff from Mater Dei will gather at Magpie’s Nest for lunch and formation activities. Guest speakers Sister Barbara Webber and Brother Carl Sherrin will enlighten us about the traditions of the Presentation Sisters and Christian Brothers, offering insights about how the tradition of Catholic education in Wagga and abroad might inspire our College community into the future. Staff will then have time for reflection about how they might continue these legacies in their work.
Presentation Sisters’ Sesquicentenary
Last week selected staff and students attended the Presentation Sisters’ Sesquicentenary Celebrations. The days were an acknowledgement of the sustained work that the Presentation Sisters have given to the people of Wagga. We thank Mrs Millie Bright and Mrs Emma Thomson for their work on the Sesquicentenary Committee and congratulate all of the Presentation Sisters on a wonderful acknowledgement of their legacy.
Sport
We congratulate our victorious junior girls’ AFL team, who took out the Lumsden Cup (named after our very own Michelle Lumsden) and our senior girls’ AFL team, who took out the Kendall Cup last week. Both teams performed admirably and were ably coached by Ms Steph Noske.
Our boys’ teams did well to make the grand finals or the Currie and Carroll Cups and were gallant and gracious in defeat. The Currie Cup final was a particularly close game, going into extra time after scores were level at full time. We thank Mr Hope and Mr Irvine for the work they put in with both teams. A full report can be found in this newsletter.
The sporting program continues with Country Cup and Katrina Fanning Shield rugby league, NSWCCC cross country, BISSA athletics and John Vrolyks basketball competitions. We also congratulate our junior and senior netball teams on both making their Tracey Gunson Shield grand finals and wish them well for next Tuesday.
Illness
There continues to be high rates of Covid, cold and flu in the community. NSW Health advises anyone with cold and flu symptoms to stay home. For students who remain at home but are well enough to complete school work, outlines of all lessons are accessible via Canvas.
