Shane Blackman from World War One Living History

Shane Blackman from World War One Living History visited Glen Innes High in Week 3. Shane's visit is an immersive 2 hour presentation for Year 9 students who are currently studying 'Australians at War - WW1 & WW2'.

The highlight of Shane's presentation is the wide range of trinkets and artifacts from WW1, many of which were used by soldiers on the Western Front.

This is a fantastic opportunity to bring this topic to life and to better visualise what life on the Western Front would have been like for the men who fought there.

Fun Finale on Ancient Egypt study

Year 7 students have now completed their study of Ancient Egypt, and to celebrate, we dedicated a final lesson to hands-on activities.

Our young historians took their learning of Ancient Egyptian beliefs and funerary customs to the next level with a practical demonstration of mummification. While mummifying an actual person wasn’t an option, we settled on mummifying apples instead. Students carefully desiccated their apples using a combination of salt and baking soda, simulating the natron used by the Ancient Egyptians. This hands-on project helped students understand the process of mummification in an engaging way. To wrap up the lesson, we held a "Mummy Wrap" activity. Students worked in teams to wrap their classmates in toilet paper, transforming them into mummies. This exercise was great fun and involved teamwork and patience.

We have now packed our apple mummies into their sarcophagi in the storeroom and will wait until the end of the term to open them, where we will discover either carefully mummified pieces of fruit or a mouldy mess!
