Learning and Teaching

Dear Parents,
At St Joseph’s we offer structured, inclusive, and research-based nature of MultiLit interventions that complements MACS Vision for Instruction, ensuring that literacy education is effective, accessible, and responsive to the needs of every student. At St Joseph's we are fortunate to be able to offer many intervention programs through MultiLit.
MiniLit is an intensive reading instruction to support younger readers that is designed for Year 1 and 2 students but can be used for older students. It is delivered in a small group but can also be delivered one to one. It covers all key elements of reading instruction (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and oral language.
MiniLit Sage is a small group intervention program delivered to up to 4 students that is designed to support readers in Year 1 and 2. It reflects the latest scientific research for effective reading instruction and intervention. It provides explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, systematic and synthetic phonics for reading and spelling, letter formation and is connected to text reading.
Reading Tutor is a special teaching program designed for students from Year 2 up to adults who need support in learning to read. The program is usually delivered on a one-to-one basis by learning support teachers or trained teacher aides. Each session has three main components: Word Attack Skills (phonics) – which teaches children skills to improve the accuracy and fluency of their reading, as well as spelling.
Sight Words – which teaches students to quickly recognise the most common words that appear in text.
Reinforced Reading – which gives children the chance to practise their new skills by reading books aloud.
Next year we will be able to offer MacqLit. This is an explicit and systematic reading intervention program for small groups of older students to support them in reading. It provides teachers with a comprehensive sequence of lessons that includes all the key components necessary for effective reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. This program is specifically aimed to support readers in Years 3 through to high school and is delivered in small groups of students.
At St Joseph’s we are committed for our students to acquire strong foundational skills in literacy as a gateway to future learning. MultiLit programs prioritise essential reading components, such as phonemic awareness, decoding, and comprehension, reinforcing MACS’ aim to equip students with the core skills necessary for academic success.
Kind regards
