Prep Community News
Dear Prep families and carers,
We are excited to share the wonderful activities happening in our classroom during Weeks 3 and 4. As we dive deeper into our learning journey, there are only 7 weeks until the end of Term 4! This is a great time to reflect on all the fun we’ve had so far, and to look forward to the exciting events ahead. Here’s a summary of what we have been learning!
Reading:
In Week 3, we learned the new sound /ee/ and practiced reading our new heart word ‘walk’ fluently. In Week 4, we will learn the new sound /oo/ and the heart word ‘because.’ We continue to practice our segmenting and blending skills to read words. Reading fluently helps us enjoy stories more and understand what we read better. It is also important to “read like we are talking.”
When students read at home, we encourage them to identify words that contain the /ee/ and /oo/ sounds, as well as other heart words we have learned.
Writing:
In Week 3, we learned how to stretch words containing the /ee/ sound (e.g., bee, deep, creek). Now, in Week 4, we are focusing on doing the same for words with the /oo/ sound, which makes a long sound and short sound. (e.g., food, chook, hoop).
Additionally, we are learning to share narratives. Last week, we concentrated on writing the middle of a story, including the problem and the action. This week, we will write about the ending, which includes the solution. We will continue to use our 5-star writing rule to ensure we are writing our best!
Maths:
We have been having fun learning how to share equally between groups. To do this, we remember to give each person a turn. It’s important to share equally by giving one item at a time. For instance, we can practice sharing snacks or toys during playtime by taking turns to ensure everyone has a chance. We can also play games that involve sharing items, like passing a ball or distributing cards, to reinforce this skill while having fun together!
In Week 4, we will learn how much different containers hold. We will examine cups, bottles, and boxes to compare their sizes. We will guess which container can hold more, then check our guesses! We will explore the best ways to measure, such as pouring water from one cup to another or counting how many blocks fit in a box. We will practice filling containers and discussing whether they are full or empty!
Reminders/Upcoming events:
Term 4 Hats:
In Term 4, students are required to wear hats during outside play time. Please ensure your child’s hat has their name clearly written inside and remind your child to bring their hat to school each day.
Incursion at Animal Land:
In Week 7, we have an incursion at Animal Land, and we’re looking forward to experiencing horseback riding, tractor rides, and milking cows at the farm! Consent and payment ($35) is required and due by the 14th and 15th of November, depending on what date your child is attending. To check the dates for the incursion, please refer to Compass.
Thank you for your ongoing support! We are excited to see even more from the students this term. Keep it up, Preps! Just keep swimming!
All the best,
PLC Prep
