COLLEGE NEWS

HEALTH ALERT
Pertussis (whooping cough) cases have been increasing across Victoria and within Mildura and surrounding communities, particularly amongst school-aged children.
Pertussis is a bacterial respiratory illness, characterised by sore throat, persistent cough, tiredness and sometimes fevers. Those who have been vaccinated can still contract pertussis, but symptoms are likely to be less severe.
Children who contract pertussis must not attend school for 21 days after the onset of a cough OR until they have received five days of an appropriate antibiotic treatment.
Please be mindful of your children if they are unwell, keep them home, get them tested and commence treatment as suggested by your treating medical professional.

ENERGY BREAKTHROUGH
The 2024 Energy Breakthrough took place in Maryborough from Thursday 21 to Sunday 24 November. This weekend of competition draws teams of students from primary and secondary schools all over the state and celebrates STEM and friendly competition.
Secondary school teams must set up displays for their human-powered vehicles, present to judges, and give it their all in a 24-hour endurance test race. All up, 91 secondary school teams competed through days where temperatures soared to 38 degrees before rain set in on Saturday afternoon.
Five teams of dedicated racers from St Joseph's College attended. These 39 eager students from Years 7 to 12 were supported by seven staff members and approximately 20 parents and friends. We are so thankful for the massive support we receive. Our Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) program would not be as successful as it is without help from our college families.
Our results:
Team Genesis 💜
6th in B1 category
Team Resilience 💚
3rd in B2 category
Resilience also won the design and presentation section in the B2 category 🥳

These are brilliant results for a year of great racing! Well done, teams 🤩
Students and staff also expressed their thanks to Sports Co-ordinator John Fleming, who retires at the end of this year. Mr Fleming has been with the college’s Human Powered Vehicle program since 2017 and played a huge part in making it so popular.
In the words of one teacher: '[The Energy Breakthrough] is something that everyone should see for themselves. The kids are amazing.'
Here's to more trackside success in 2025!
