DEPUTY PRINCIPAL LEARNING AND TEACHING

YEAR 11

Our Year 11 students have now successfully completed their Unit 1 and 2 examinations, with some even completing Unit 3 and 4. These experiences have provided valuable insight and preparation for their final Year 12 exams, which will be completed by this time next year!

With Unit 3 and 4 Headstart concluding this week, I hope our Year 11 students are embracing the organisational skills, study habits, and commitment necessary for a successful Year 12. As I highlighted in my recent address to the cohort, we are not asking that every student achieves the highest ATAR possible. Instead, we ask that each student gives their utmost effort, so they can look back with pride, knowing they started giving their all this week (or even earlier!) regardless of the final number they receive.

YEAR 10

For our Year 10 students, this year has focused on laying the foundations for VCE or their future careers through the VCE Vocational Major (VM) pathway. Currently, our prospective Year 11 students are engaged in their Headstart program, bonding as a group and preparing to transition into senior school. This step marks a critical period where they will develop independence and build the work ethic that will shape the individuals they become beyond their schooling years.

Our Year 10 students also completed their exams successfully and are now nearing the final phase of their secondary education.

YEAR 9

Exams continue to be a valuable learning process, and our Year 9 students are no exception. We wish them the very best of luck as they complete their final preparations for tomorrow’s English and Maths exams.

STUDENT AWARD PRESENTATION EVENING

The students have been exceptionally impressive in what has been a particularly full and busy year. We continue to be impressed with our students' determination, resilience and motivation to achieve at the highest possible level.

Our annual St Joseph’s College Awards Presentation will be held at the Mercy Theatre on Monday 9 December and commence at 6:00pm.

It is very important to recognise the efforts of our students. It is a proud tradition of schools, and St Joseph’s College in particular, to celebrate those who achieve at the highest level. It is also essential that we recognise those who epitomise the Core Values of our college. These awards especially honour those who have achieved excellence in their chosen fields.

Award recipients will generally be contacted the week before the awards presentation. However, in some cases, this may occur a few days prior, as we will be relying on results from exams and reports for some awards.  Award recipients will be notified by Friday 6 December and be given further details about the evening.

HOW ARE AWARD WINNERS DETERMINED?

Years 7 to 10 Academic Awards

Each student receives a score for each assessment task for each subject, which is then averaged. The top 10% of students in Years 7 to 10 will be presented with academic awards.

VCE Unit 1 and 2

VCE Unit 1 and 2 subject awards are given to those students who achieve the highest score in each subject. The subject score is based on the scores they received for Unit Assessment tasks and the subject exam.

VCE Unit 3 and 4

VCE Unit 3 and 4 subject awards are given to those students who achieve the highest score in each subject for their internal marks (SACs). At this time, VCAA study scores are unavailable, so we will recognise the highest achievement in each subject according to their VCAA Study Score at a college assembly in February 2025.

VCE VM Awards

The VCE VM Awards are given to students who have, over the course of the year, demonstrated excellent planning and organisational skills. They can work effectively with others as part of a team and show good leadership and team management skills.

I am really looking forward to having many students and their families present for this great celebration.

YEAR 12 GRADUATION AND RESULTS

It was very pleasing to see Year 12 students and their families celebrate the conclusion of their secondary education. It really is a reminder of what a great, supportive community we have at St Joseph’s College.

Our Careers Practitioner, Ms Fiona Dimasi, will be available to work with students once results are released.
