Visual Arts in Term 1

I am excited to be sharing with you what students will be covering in Term 1 in Visual Arts.  We have a colourful and fun term ahead across the year levels and I’m looking forward to exploring creativity in a variety of ways with the students.

Junior students will be focussing on drawing, painting and construction. Foundation students will firstly be getting used to the Art room etiquette, the layout of the room and the materials that we use regularly.  They will be creating a collage towards the end of the term. The Year 1 students will be making some interesting paper monsters using paper scraps.  They will also complete an artist study of Claude Monet, Axel Scheffler and Mem Fox. This will include some appreciation work of these artists and a close look at the different styles. The Year 2 students will make a wax resist spider web picture and then go on to add a detailed spider drawing. They will also explore cool and warm colours in different mediums.

Senior students will be focussing on drawing, oil pastels and construction using recycled materials. Year 3 students will complete an artist study of Van Gogh. Please look forward to seeing some beautiful sunflower artwork around the school completed both collaboratively and individually.  The Year 3 students will build a Lorax our of recycled materials. Year 4 will focus on colour and concentric circles.  A whole kaleidoscope of colour display will make an appearance. They will also be doing some paper construction work and making some paper and card 3D cities. Year 5 will be looking at the artwork of Kandinsky and abstract art.  They will also be making a 3D robot using recycled rubbish so please start collecting boxes and lids etc, ready to bring in later in the term.  Year 6 are making paper flags to decorate the Art room and look out for some wonderful cake and milkshake art inspired by the American artist Wayne Thiebaud that has the illusion of being 3D and they often look good enough to eat or drink!

Thank you to those families that have already sent in spare shoe boxes. They are very much appreciated. Please keep them coming through the year as they are so useful, especially when Year 2 make the Under the Sea dioramas later in the year.  Empty paper towel cardboard tubes would also be very helpful and gratefully received.

A new focus in the Art Room is that I have started an ‘Artists of the Month’ display board. Students have been writing down a country that they have a connection to or are simply interested in. Over the course of the year, I will pick out country names and display images of artwork by artists from the chosen countries as well as the flag in addition to  a world map to show the location. I will pick out 2 or 3 countries per month. We have got the ball rolling with Serbia. Many students were interested in this. It might be something you can do with your child, looking for an artist or a specific artwork  from the focus country.
