Supporting Your Daughter’s Emotional Wellbeing

As Heads of House, we understand that for our students, emotions can sometimes feel unpredictable and, in the heat of the moment, can rule our actions and decisions. In a busy school environment, it’s easy for students to react impulsively rather than taking the time to process their emotions. This can sometimes lead to unintended consequences, such as friendship conflicts, misinterpretations in communication with teachers and peers, or reacting impulsively in challenging situations. However, research shows that emotions follow clear patterns and can be understood and managed effectively.

One powerful tool in understanding emotions is Dr. Marc Brackett’s Mood Meter. This framework measures emotions along two simple scales:

  • Pleasantness (from low to high)
  • Energy Levels (from low to high)

By helping our students identify and understand their emotions, we empower them to take control of their emotional responses and build essential life skills that will benefit them in all areas of their lives. Emotional regulation plays a vital role in personal development, learning, and relationships. Here’s how it benefits your daughter:

  • Understanding Emotional Shifts: Emotions are constantly changing in response to different experiences. Recognizing this helps students build emotional agility and resilience.
  • Building a Sense of Agency: When students understand the connection between their environment, thoughts, and feelings, they realize they have the power to influence their emotional responses in a positive way.
  • Strengthening Resilience: Developing strategies to manage emotions effectively equips students to navigate setbacks and challenges with confidence and self-awareness.

Our one common goal is for our students to advocate for themselves in a constructive and respectful manner. If they can master this, it will strengthen relationships, provide support to their peers, and enhance the overall sense of belonging and inclusivity at Mount Alvernia. Together, in partnership, we can equip our young people with the emotional skills they need to thrive - both in school and beyond.
