Grade 6 students attending the Halogen Leadership Conference in the city
Grade 6 leaders attended the Halogen National Young Leaders Conference earlier this week in this CBD, and heard from numerous inspirational speakers about the key qualities an effective leader. See Rosie and Bella's roaming report on some of the guest speakers:
The Halogen Conference was held in the Melbourne Arts And Exhibition Centre in the city. Our Year Six students travelled into Melbourne by train, and walked through Melbourne’s riverside, past Polly Woodside Wharf. Four guest speakers came to give advice to us future leaders.
Catherine Laga'aia: Soon to play Moana in an upcoming live movie version, 18 year-old actress Catherine Laga’aia showed persistence through tough times and long, tiring days. She was not allowed to tell her friends about where she was going, what she doing or how long she was going for. Her story was inspiring and empowering, whilst also telling us to never take time, family or rest for granted.
Emma McKeown: Australia’s most successful Olympian and one of the world's great athletes, Emma shared her top ten lessons in leadership that she had learnt as an athlete (swimming). She taught us to never give up and that good leaders are persistent, she also shared that patience and failure is the best motivator. “Missing out on London 2012 was the best thing that happened to me, it taught me how to manage failure" said Emma.
Our Cultural Captains Jonathan, Archie and Beau prepared some interview questions for our Japanese visitors:
We were really interested in your perspective as a visitor to our school and city. It helps us with our learning. We asked some of our Japanese visitors to respond to these questions.
What’s the biggest difference between Australia and Japan?
There is so much space here in Australia, it is very warm and we love seeing the beach. In Japan our city is very busy.
Is this your first time in Australia, and have you been to other countries?
For most of us, this is our first time. And for some of us, our first time overseas! We have travelled to lots of places in Japan though.
What’s your favourite thing that you have done on this trip to Melbourne?
We went to Healesville and pat a koala!
I went shopping in the Melbourne CBD, that was really good.
I had dinner with my host family at an Italian restaurant - i enjoyed trying the local pizza and pasta.
What do you like about this school?
Thank you Brighton Beach, we have enjoyed our stay and are sad to go. All the children have been so nice, and we have liked teaching you important parts of our culture and the Japanese words that describe them.

Our Student Representative Council is in the process of being confirmed. Students are selected by their peers to represent in the SRC, who meet regularly throughout the term and played an integral role in modelling and reinforcing our 6Rs, facilitating friendship lunches and termly fundraisers.
SRC students will be presented with their badges at assembly on March 24 at 2:45pm.
Spotlight on our Art captains
Bella L - I like being a Visual Art Captain because it’s a safe space to express your feelings. I’m looking forward to the Art Show later in the year and being involved and sharing information about it with the rest of the school.
Sophie A - I love being a Visual Art Captain because you can do so many different things and I get to express my feelings through the art that I create.
Sophie B - I really like art because I find it to be calming. I enjoy working with clay and making different creations. I’m excited for the Art Show in Term 4, as this is my first year at BBPS and I am happy that I get to be a part of it as a Visual Art Captain.
Gab - Being a Visual Art Captain means that I can be as creative and imaginative as I want to be! I also like art like my mum.
