Gospel Reflection

6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Summary

Jesus speaks to a large crowd, offering hope to those who are struggling. He tells them that God sees their pain and promises blessings to the poor, the hungry, those who are sad, and those who are treated badly for following Him. At the same time, He warns those who have everything they want now—riches, comfort, and praise from others—that these things won’t last forever. Jesus is reminding everyone that true happiness comes from trusting in God, not from the things of this world.

Reflection

This passage is a powerful reminder that God is with us, especially in our hardest moments. When life feels unfair, when we struggle, or when we feel left out, Jesus tells us that we are not forgotten—God’s kingdom belongs to those who trust in Him. Instead of chasing things that won’t last, like wealth or popularity, we are invited to put our faith in God’s love and His promises. No matter what challenges we face, He is our source of strength and hope. Let’s choose to trust in Him, knowing that His blessings are far greater than anything the world can offer!

  • What do I rely on for happiness and security—things like success, approval, or material comfort? How might I find deeper fulfillment beyond these?
  • How do I respond to challenges or setbacks in life? Do I see them as opportunities for growth, or do they discourage me?
  • In what ways can I be more mindful of those who are struggling around me, and how can I offer support, kindness, or encouragement?

Gospel Reading:

Luke 6:17, 20-26

Jesus came down with the Twelve and stopped at a piece of level ground where there was a large gathering of his disciples with a great crowd of people from all parts of Judaea and from Jerusalem and from the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon. Then fixing his eyes on his disciples he said:

‘How happy are you who are poor: yours is the kingdom of God.

Happy you who are hungry now: you shall be satisfied.

Happy you who weep now: you shall laugh.

Happy are you when people hate you, drive you out, abuse you, denounce your name as criminal, on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice when that day comes and dance for joy, for then your reward will be great in heaven. This was the way their ancestors treated the prophets.

‘But alas for you who are rich: you are having your consolation now.

Alas for you who have your fill now: you shall go hungry.

Alas for you who laugh now: you shall mourn and weep.

‘Alas for you when the world speaks well of you! This was the way their ancestors treated the false prophets.’

Prayer

Loving God, Thank You for seeing me in every season of life—through joy and struggle, abundance and need. Help me to seek true fulfillment in You rather than in the temporary things of this world. Give me a heart that trusts in Your promises, strength to face challenges with hope, and compassion to care for those in need. May I live with gratitude, humility, and faith, knowing that Your love is my greatest treasure.

Amen.
