VISUAL ARTS/ PERFORMING ARTS

What do the three books above have in common?

Watch this space for more clues about this year's Whole School Production!

In Visual Arts students have been busy making the front covers for their Art Portfolios, and they are looking fantastic! Styles have included Graffiti writing, Bubble writing and tessellated backgrounds. We will now be moving on to our collaborative piece, which will go up onto the giant display wall soon, so keep an eye out and see if you can find your child's part.

STEAM

Hello!

My name is Caitlin Filby (Ms Filby) and I am the new STEAM teacher at Weeden Heights Primary School.

It has been a pleasure getting to know all the students and their interests in STEAM.

Students have been representing their understanding of STEAM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths.

In Term 1:

•    Preps are learning all about how movements are made

•    Year 1/2 are learning about how push and pull forces make things move or change shape

•    Year 2/3 and 3/4 are learning about how forces such as push, pull, friction, gravity, tension, and torque act on objects. These forces can cause movement, floating and flying. They are learning how to represent these forces with labelled diagrams, such as out Tug of War Investigation (below)

•    Year 5/6C are learning about light sources, how light is transmitted, absorbed, reflected, and refracted and how shadows are formed.

KITCHEN/GARDEN

5/6A have had a fabulous start to the term in the kitchen and garden. They are growing silverbeet, parsley, radish, zucchini and beans. They were very excited to see that some zucchinis were already growing, and they spent extra time watering and taking care of the garden bed. They are looking forward to cooking with these in the coming weeks.

They have also had their first kitchen class for the year where they made some delicious sorbet and smoothies.

PE

This term students are focusing on listening skills, following instructions, teamwork and good sportsmanship. They have enjoyed a range of games that help promote these skills.

FRENCH

  • Prep

For their first lesson, the Prep students where introduced to the country of France with a couple of videos, including 'Peppa Pig goes to France'. Together we had a look on the map and discussed how long it would take to travel there from Melbourne. In turn, they practised saying 'Bonjour' (Hello) and  'Je m'appelle...' (My name is...).

  • Grade 1/2

The students are learning how to spell numbers 1-10 and will be assessed soon.

They will then learn how to count to 20.

  • Grades 2/3 and 3/4

The main topic of this Term will be the study of a particular French region called 'La Dordogne'. To introduce this topic, the students were given a drawing of the region and had to use their bilingual dictionaries to translate simple sentences from French to English and then find them on the drawing.

  • Grades 5/6

In preparation for the production of our school book 'Diary of a Weeden Kid', the students are revising body parts and learning how to draw them in a similar style as the drawings of the series 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid'.
