THE STAND UP PROJECT

Whole School Upstander Program launches at Whitehorse PS!

Last Thursday, our grade 5 and 6 students recently engaged in informative sessions for The Stand-Up Project (SUP), a comprehensive initiative aimed at student leadership, agency and voice. The Stand-Up Project is a whole-school approach designed to empower students, teachers, and parents to promote upstanding behaviour.

During the sessions, students were introduced to the core values and goals of the SUP program. Dr. Zach Greig, the founder of SUP, and his team provided an overview of how the program works and its significance in building a supportive school culture. He emphasized the role of the 5/6 cohort and SUP leaders by learning to identify different behaviours (e.g., friendship fires, mean on purpose, bullying), the drivers and impacts of poor behaviour, and how to be safe and effective Upstanders.

Interested students were then encouraged to become SUP Student Leaders. These leaders’ identified issues in their school they would like to address and began the process of creating class plans and activities that they will continue to work on and then teach the importance of ‘Upstanding’ to their younger peers, teachers, and families.

We look forward to seeing our 5/6 SUP leaders make a difference in our school community. Stay tuned for further updates on our upcoming SUP activities.
