Year 8 News

What a year it has been for our Year 8 students! From the very first day, it was clear that this group was ready to embrace challenges and dive into there second year of secondary school. Watching the students grow in confidence, take responsibility for their learning, and develop their own sense of identity within the school community has been incredibly rewarding.
This year has been packed with exciting experiences—camps, excursions, class activities, and events that pushed students to try new things and work together. From contributing to SRC initiatives, showing off their talents in Kurnai’s Got Talent, to getting hands-on in Arts, Technology, and Tech School excursions, Year 8s have tackled it all with energy and enthusiasm!
As they move into Year 9, students can look forward to even more opportunities to explore their passions. With Project Time and a wider range of electives tailored to their interests, they’ll get to dive deeper into areas they love, try new skills, and continue building confidence as they shape their high school journey.
It’s been a fantastic year, and we’re so proud of everything our Year 8 students have achieved. Here’s to a brilliant Year 9 ahead—full of learning, growth, and fun!
Head Start
Head Start begins next Monday the 1st of December. This is when students will begin working with their 2026 classes and teachers. Headstart plays a vital role in ensuring a smooth transition into the next year—it allows students to become familiar with new expectations, routines, and subject areas, setting them up for success from day one in 2026. Students will have an assembly on Monday and receive their timetables.
I will be following the Year 8's up into Year 9 and remain there Team Leader. If you have any concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me at (03) 5165 0600 - option 2 or Jeff.Derkacs2@education.vic.gov.au
End of Year
To celebrate the end of the year, students are also looking forward to the College-Wide Celebration Day at Gumbuya World and the College Awards Ceremony, recognising the effort and achievements of our students. We also have two onsite activity days planned to finish the term with fun and connection.
