Narrandera Sandhills Visit

On Monday 15 December, students visited the Narrandera Sandhills where they had the opportunity to learn directly from Uncle Owen  about Aboriginal life, culture and history in the local area. Uncle Owen  shared personal stories of growing up on the Sandhills, describing daily life including walking together in single file to the river, families living in tin shacks without electricity, and the impacts of government housing and assimilation policies.

Students engaged with a range of cultural artefacts, including traditional tools, weapons, stones, artworks and kangaroo skin. Uncle Owen also showed students where Uncle Mick creates boomerangs and didgeridoos, and shared examples of bush resources such as brown snake, goanna and kangaroo tail, which were respectfully passed around for students to view.

This excursion provided students with valuable firsthand insight into Aboriginal culture, colonisation, and lived experiences on the Sandhills. The learning from this visit will directly support students in completing their Aboriginal Studies assessment task due in Week 10.
