Interschool Athletics Carnival - A Day of Team Spirit and Achievement
Over the last two weeks, our talented students proudly represented our school at the Interschool Athletics Carnival, and what an outstanding day it was! From the moment they arrived, our students demonstrated enthusiasm, determination, and wonderful sportsmanship.
Over two days, they took part in a range of events including sprints, relays, jumps, and throws. No matter the challenge, each student gave their very best effort, supported one another, and showed what it truly means to be part of our school community. Their behaviour, resilience, and teamwork were a credit to themselves, their families, and our school.
We are incredibly proud of every student who participated. Whether they were competing on the track, cheering from the sidelines, or stepping into a last-minute event, they embodied our school values and represented us with pride. Their positive attitude and encouragement of others made the day even more special.
A big thank you to our staff and families who attended, supported, and helped make the day run smoothly.
Congratulations to all students—you should be very proud of your efforts and achievements. We certainly are!
A special congratulations and mention to our medal winners. You were remarkable over the course of events and lead by example to the rest of the team, well done.
Great Southern Grammar finished second in the overall standings which is a credit to the team performance. I am very proud of this team for how they fought in every race and event. It was a close one this year!

Classroom News
We hope you enjoy reading about what has been happening in our Early Childhood and Primary School classes.
Kindergarten
Wow, the Kindergarten school year is almost complete. Our classes are thoroughly enjoying the final few days of the school year, especially with all of the Christmas craft activities. Glitter, glitter and more glitter, because who doesn’t love glitter? We have been busily rehearsing our Christmas dances and can’t wait to celebrate with the whole Primary School next week at the concert! At this time of year, it is lovely to reflect on the growth and development of each child in our class. It pulls on the heartstrings as we get set to watch our little Kindergarten kiddies spread their wings and fly into full-time schooling in Pre-Primary. We are so proud of each and every one of them and our classes are enjoying celebrating this special time of year together.
Pre-Primary
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! Oh, what fun it is to ... go to the swimming pool every single day! The Pre-Primary children have loved attending their first in-term swimming lessons and are learning responsibility for their belongings along the way. We are in the full swing of Christmas fun, completing Christmas activities that help develop our literacy and numeracy skills as well as hone our fine motor skills. We cannot wait to share our special Christmas surprise with our families!
Year One
The Christmas fun has begun! Special cards and gifts have been made, and Christmas activities have inspired and delighted all. The Year One students have been amazing with their swimming routine. The days have started with some important Mathematics work (it is still school!), the Nativity has been discussed and acted out, and the class song has been rehearsed. Then a Christmas task has been set. Swimming has taken up the middle of the day and the children have returned, happy and hungry, all ready for lunch. The afternoons have been more relaxing. The Post Office is in full flow, with parcels being delivered and cards and letters written and sent. Some children have enjoyed cuddling up on the sofa to read some Christmas books or finish some Christmas craft. Where has the year gone?
Year Two
This week has been full of festive fun with lots of Christmas-themed Mathematics activities! We have enjoyed colouring 2D nets and assembling them into amazing 3D Christmas decorations. We also challenged ourselves to complete a symmetrical Santa drawing − not as easy as it sounds! In addition, we have started decorating our Christmas trees for the upcoming concert, created beautiful cards for our families, and continued learning the lyrics and actions for our performance. And, of course, we have kept up with our daily swimming sessions!
Year Four
This week we have been putting the finishing touches to our Christmas outfits prior to our performance next week. This involved crafting and decorating our own elf headbands and decorating our percussion instruments. I shall not give too much away. You will have to be there next Tuesday to see the finished pieces. We have also been creating some more traditional Christmas decorations from rapid setting clay. These you may be able to spot in next week's Awards Assembly.
Year Five
This week in Year Five we have recovered from a busy Week Seven which saw us complete double swimming lessons and the Interschool Athletics Carnival for some. The focus has been on wrapping up...Secret Santa presents...and a busy term. We have also been working on our Christmas concert songs. We cannot wait to show the parents these next week.
Languages
These last couple of weeks, students have been busy immersing themselves in French culture.
Middle Primary students have been introduced to the song ‘On écrit sur les murs’. The music video (linked here: https://youtu.be/VV5oVYVGfNc) became a springboard for conversations about kindness, unity and belonging. Students wrote messages − both in English and French − expressing hopes for themselves, their peers and the wider world.
Upper Primary students have been watching French-language movie trailers, using them as authentic listening resources. Students searched for French vocabulary and answered reflection questions. Here are the three films we explored:
- Le Petit Nicolas — a fun, family-oriented film that prompted students to notice everyday vocabulary and humour in French life.
- Belle et Sébastien — this film trailer opened up discussion about French countryside, escape and evasion during World War II and mountain dog breeds.
C'est quoi cette famille?! — the trailer encouraged reflection on family dynamics, relationships and communication, and gave students a chance to spot conversational French.
It has been a fun and entertaining way for students to finish the year while engaging with authentic French language and culture.
