The Arts
Viewpoint Art Exhibition
The Lorraine Harrison 3-D Youth Prize opened at the Pop Galleries, Albany Residency Museum on Saturday. Rif McNeil-Hanna and Mischa Collin both had works exhibited, but it was past Grammar students who stole the show! Isabella De Giambattista (2022, Mokare) was awarded First Prize and her sister Angelina De Giambattista (2024, Mokare) received a Highly Commended award. Their mother, Amanda De Giambattista, won the adult section! The judging was conducted anonymously, without the artists' names.
It’s a lovely show and is on until Friday 12 December.
Possum News
One little western ringtail possum was found outside the ECC building on Tuesday morning, possibly suffering from heatstroke. It was gently wrapped in Mr Hardey’s Eagles scarf and taken to the vet for care!
Please keep looking out for our native wildlife as the days get hotter.
Curtains Up! Years Seven to Nine Drama Performances Shine
Last week, the Years Seven, Eight and Nine Drama classes showcased their plays to an audience of parents.
The performances began on Tuesday when the Year Eight students presented A Weekend Mystery by Sara Feinberg (available at www.dramanotebook.com/plays-for-kids). This murder mystery, set in an old mansion and featuring characters reminiscent of those in a game of Cluedo, takes an unexpected twist. As bodies begin to pile up, a detective suddenly appears to help solve the mystery.
On Wednesday and Thursday, the Year Seven students performed a series of traditional stories from around the world. Some of these tales were creatively reimagined, resulting in a Gen-Z version of Cinderella and a rendition of Jason and the Argonauts set in a mafia-inspired pizza empire. Starting with the original stories, the students designed their own costumes, props, sets, sound, lighting, and scripts.
Finally, on Friday, the Year Nine students presented an improvisation inspired by Commedia dell’Arte. The scenario involved a king rescuing his daughter from a neighbouring kingdom, a witch casting a spell, servants (zanni) failing to deliver messages, a duel and a robbery. Performing in their beautifully crafted masks, the side-splitting performance nearly knocked the audience off their chairs.
Well done to all the performers for their outstanding effort and a special thank you to the families who attended to support the students. Your presence truly made the magic of theatre come alive.
