Child Safeguarding

NEW SOCIAL MEDIA REGULATIONS
From 10 December 2025, new national regulations will require age-restricted social media platforms to take reasonable steps to prevent children under 16 from creating or keeping an account on social media.
These changes are designed to better protect young Australians from the pressures and risks that come with social media use. Many platforms use design features that encourage excessive screen time and can expose young people to content that may negatively impact their health, wellbeing, and safety.
As of 21 November 2025, eSafety has identified the following as age-restricted platforms:
Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok, Twitch, X (Twitter), YouTube, Kick and Reddit.
We encourage all families to talk with their children about these changes, review any existing accounts, and stay informed about how to support safe and healthy online habits.
This special report from School TV addresses many FAQ's which will be beneficial for parents to look watch prior to December 10.
Another great resource provided is the eSafety Commissioner website which is the number one spot for up to date and accurate information surrounding the social media ban and all other eSafety matters. Parents, please familiarise yourself with this website.

Here are our top tips to help you and your child get ready for the upcoming social media delay.
Remember, children can still explore, play and connect online. Unfortunately, that means they’ll also still face online dangers. It’s important you:
- Talk to them about your own online experiences.
- Connect with them, both online and offline.
- Build trust so they’re not afraid to come to you if they see something wrong online.
This change will give under 16s valuable time to develop the critical skills and healthy digital habits needed to manage an account on age-restricted social media platforms.
Check out our social media age restrictions hub for more info and resources to help you get ready.
