PREP

Hello to our family and friends! This is our final update for the year.

We have been so busy in the Prep area. We have worked hard all year and if you look at our writing and our maths work, you will see we are now ready for grade one!

Reading and Writing

We have been reading decodable texts from Decodable Readers Australia. We have continued segmenting and blending words and building up our bank of known high frequency words.

With lots of repeated practise, we are achieving our success criteria:

  • I can read a short decodable text fluently and understand its meaning.

  •  I can segment and blend CVCC words accurately.

In our reading and writing sessions, we have been learning to recognise the features of information texts. We read texts about penguins and plants and recorded facts that we found interesting and important.

We also learned to create labelled drawings:

Mathematics

Students have been consolidating their understanding of ordinal numbers and numbers beyond 20. We have focussed on counting and the representation of two-digit numbers in tens and ones. Students used ten-frames, bundling and base-10 blocks as well as counting to 100 on a hundred chart. Here are some examples of tasks we have worked on:

  • Write the number of tens and ones for a given set of ten-frames for two-digit numbers.

  • Match the number of full and partially filled ten-frames for a given number of tens and ones.

  • Draw/place counters onto ten-frames to match a given number of tens and ones for two-digit numbers.

Prep Breakfast

This year's Brookside Prep Breakfast was held on Wednesday 26th November. The Prep Breakfast at school is the beginning of Brookside College's camping program. It helps to develop students' independence and organisational skills when getting ready for school. Students arrived dressed in their pyjamas, dressing gown and slippers! We had a lovely morning together with delicious cereal and toast! After breakfast, students independently washed their breakfast dishes and changed into their school uniform! Amazing!!

Year 1

Writing: Over the past few weeks, we have been diving into functional writing! We have learned how to write thank you notes, posters, invitations, and even created a brochure for our Stay Late event. We had so much fun using our creativity to share important details in a fun and colourful way!

Reading: In reading, we have been practicing new digraphs and using them in both our reading and writing. It’s been exciting to see how these new sounds are helping us improve our phonics and spelling. We are becoming confident readers and writers every day!

Maths: In Maths, we have been exploring grouping and sharing with hands-on activities like arrays and equal groups.

We have been learning all about capacity too! Using containers, water, and objects like Unifix cubes, we have been comparing different containers to see which one holds more or less. It’s been so much fun to experiment and discover how measurements are everywhere!

Humanities: In Humanities, we have been stepping back in time to explore how families, schools, and communities have changed over the years. We have had fun comparing life “then and now” and sharing our own family stories. It’s been a great way to learn about the past and how technology had changed our lives!

Science: In Science, we have been discovering how light and sound are produced by different sources and how we can sense them. We have been experimenting with different light sources and sound vibrations, and it’s been a lot of fun learning how these cool things work in real life!

We had great fun at our Stay Late event!

We are super excited about our Funtastic Excursion this week — the perfect way to wrap up a wonderful term of learning! We are looking forward to all the fun activities ahead!

It’s been a fantastic few weeks and we are ready for more!

Year 2

Dear Parents,

Can you believe we are already so close to the end of 2025? Only two more weeks to go—hooray! We have been incredibly busy enjoying our learning, our special events, and having fun with friends.

We recently had our very first sleepover night, and it was such an exciting and memorable experience for everyone. The students were amazing! Now we are counting down to our Grade Two excursion to Puffing Billy Excursion. We know it is going to be a magical day full of fun, adventure, and special memories.

We are also practising hard for our End-of-Year Concert. The students have been putting so much energy and effort into their performance, and we cannot wait for you to see them shine on stage.

What We Have Been Learning

Writing: This term, we have been learning functional writing—writing for a purpose to give information to the right audiences. We have created colourful brochures and sweet thank-you cards for friends, teachers and family. This helps us become confident writers and speakers.

Maths: In Maths, we have been using arrays to solve multiplication and division problems. We are getting really good at drawing arrays in a neat and clear way and explaining how to use them to solve multiplication and division questions.

Science: We have been exploring different living things. Each of us chose an animal or insect to investigate, learning about habitats, appearance, life cycles, and more. We worked hard to summarise key facts in our booklets and reports. We believe our families will enjoy our work very much on Seesaw.

Health: In Health, we have been learning about emotions. We are becoming better at recognising how people feel through facial expressions and body language. We are also learning ways to show kindness, care, and support to others.

We are so proud of everything we have achieved in Grade 2. We have grown, learned, and shared so much joy throughout 2025. Here are some photos from our year that highlight our amazing experiences and memories in Grade Two!
