Term 4 Week 6
#magnifysandhurst
It has been a busy fortnight in the P-2 area with lots of wonderful learning happening.
Foundation
The Preps have been spelling CVC, CVCC and CCVC words. They have listened to the sounds in words and have recorded the spelling of these words on their whiteboards. They have been listening for the vowel sounds in the middle of words. They have been writing sentences with capital letters, full stops or question marks. They have read the story “Stick Man”. It is a narrative story. The students have focussed on the main character and explored new vocabulary like beware, weary and chuckle.
Gr 1
Grade Ones have been reading the story, “Little Dog and the Summer Holiday”. It is a narrative text. The students have been learning about adjectives to describe the dog eg scruffy. As part of Spelling the Grade 1s have been learning that the /aw/ sound in words can be spelt with ‘aw’ like claw and ‘au’ as in Autumn. They have also revised spelling words with double letters such as ‘ff’, ‘ll’and ‘ss’. They have revised a rhyme that helps them to remember if the last sound needs a double letter – “If the word is short, and the vowel is short, double the end, don’t get caught!”
Gr 2
Grade 2s have been reading the story “The Twenty-Seventh Annual African Hippopotamus Race”. It is a narrative text. The students have answered prompt questions that begin with who/what/where/when/how/why. As part of Spelling, the students have been adding suffixes to the end of words. They have learnt the rule for doubling the final consonant before adding a suffix. The rhyme they have learnt to remember the rule is “If the word is a one syllable word or if the final syllable has a short vowel before the final consonant, you have to double the final consonant before adding the suffix”. As part of Grammar, the students have been editing sentences by adding quotation marks, fixing capital letters and full stops and using conjunctions to join to sentences together.
Foundation
In Maths, the Prep students have been learning about Australian coins and notes. They have been orally counting forwards to 100. They have been looking for the missing numbers on a 100s number chart.
Gr 1
In Mathematics, Grade 1s have been revising time using clock faces. They can tell the time to o’clock. They have also learnt that events like reading a book and brushing your teeth, have a duration and can be sequenced over a length of time.
Gr 2
In Maths, the Grade 2s have been learning about fractions. They can solve problems to find the half, quarter and eighths to find a solution
Gr 3 and 4
Literacy
Gr 3-4s have begun our last novel 'The One and Only Ivan' by Katherine Applegate. We have begun revision of most concepts covered eg conjunctions 'because', 'but' and 'so', suffixes and prefixes. Spelling of ‘or’, ‘ore’, ‘oor’, ‘au’ words e.g. nor, pore, poor, sauce AND ‘are’, ‘air’, ‘eer’, ‘ear’ words. We have also learned about homonyms with these spelling choices eg. stair/stare, pare/pair. We have also revised contractions eg doesn't, can't, I'll.
Our vocabulary is taken from the novel 'The One and Only Ivan'. We have learned what the following words mean: timid, convenient, irrational, scrawny, critically, tactful, indifferent, uncertain, mesmerised, unpredictable, wince and ragged.
Work on narrative writing is complete and we have begun persuasive writing and using more interesting verbs. We are also in the midst of DIBELS testing and Lexile Reading tests to finish off the year.
Maths
We have completed our unit on Decimals and how they are used in measurement of length and mass. Last week we solved worded multiplication and division problems and multiplying and dividing by powers of 10. This week we move on to four x one digit multiplication with materials (no regrouping) and multiplying by one digit numbers with a vertical algorithm.
Gr 5 and 6
Literacy
In Literacy, we are enjoying our current novel called "The Last Bear" by Hannah Gold. This story is about a lonely girl named April that travels to the Arctic with her scientist father and befriends a polar bear. It focuses on their developing friendship, and April's determination to help the bear, who is stranded and suffering due to the effects of climate change. In connection with this novel, during writing time, students are focusing on persuasive writing and in particular, writing a persuasive letter about the protection of Polar Bears in the Arctic. During spelling, our focus will be on root words ‘mit' & 'mis' and 'rect'.
Maths
In Maths this week we are finishing our unit on 'Fractions, Decimals & Percentages'. Next week, we will move on to our final topic for the year - focusing on the four operations.
