Science

Another fortnight has flown by in Science!  Last week we reflected and reported on our learning from conducting simulations of some natural disasters that take place on our Earth.  It is wonderful to listen to the thoughtful observations and understandings the students share and brilliant to observe the detailed diagrams and explanations many of our students apply to their written work.

We have also been exploring Earth’s natural resources, their many uses in our world and the importance of looking after these. This has provoked a lot of discussion around the importance of sustainability as students are aware that some of Earth’s resources are renewable, although often at a slower rate compared to the rate at which they are used, whilst other resources are non-renewable.

This week our mid to senior students began learning more about the behaviour of Earth as a planet, in particular the rotation and revolution of our planet within our solar system.  Students enjoyed studying a 3D model which demonstrated this process, as well as assisting to model the sun and the Earth using different props in order to show how we experience night and day and the four seasons throughout the year.

Students have been enjoying the opportunity to have “explore time” towards the end of science sessions when they have completed a set task.  During this time, they are able to interact with different activities and stations set up around the science room, largely focusing on our term theme, Earth and Space.
