Visual Art

Hello St. Mary’s community,
Ms. Alexandra here! It’s been a wonderfully creative time in the Art Room over the past couple of weeks. Our students have been busy working on their major project, “About Me in Pictures,” where they’ve expressed their identities, interests, and stories through visual art. In recognition of Reconciliation Week, we’ve also been learning about and celebrating Aboriginal culture. As part of this, students created beautiful emu constellation artworks, inspired by traditional stories and the night sky. It’s been a joyful and engaging time, and I’m so proud of the effort and enthusiasm each student has shown. Warm Regards,
Ms. Alexandra
Reconciliation Week – Dark Emu Art Project: Students learned about the Dark Emu, a shape formed by the dark spaces between stars in the Milky Way, linked to Indigenous legends. Emus were seen as creator spirits helping people understand the world.
● Grades 4–6 created their own emu artworks using drawings traced with PVA glue and glitter.
- F–2 students used emu outlines, adding colour and sparkle. The process was detailed and required patience and skill with tools and materials.
‘About Me in Pictures’ – Mixed Media Project: A 3-part personal artwork made with:
- Six illustrations representing the student, cut out for collage
- Acrylic background for texture
- Pastel colour bar showing their palette
The focus is on self-expression and creativity: "Make it real and then make it yours." It encourages experimentation, problem-solving, and reveals each student’s unique style and story. It’s been amazing to see the student’s personalities shine through their work!
