I Love Maths Day at UWS and TAFE Nirimba
On Tuesday, 20th May, a group of enthusiastic Wyndham College students joined peers from St John Paul II Catholic College for an exciting incursion known as ‘I Love Maths Day’.
Hosted by the University of Western Sydney (UWS) and TAFE Nirimba, this annual event gave students the opportunity to see how mathematics comes to life in real-world careers.
The day featured a variety of engaging, hands-on workshops tailored to students considering future pathways in construction, health, fitness, and more.
In the Maths for Construction workshop, students applied geometry and measurement skills to practical tasks such as interpreting building plans, calculating areas and volumes, estimating material needs, and working with real-world dimensions, essential skills in trades and the building industry.
The Maths for Health and Fitness session gave students insight into the role of mathematics in personal health and allied health careers. Activities included calculating body mass index (BMI), heart rate zones, dosage conversions, and more, all critical to roles in nursing, fitness, and health science.
Students also completed ‘R U Ready?’, a digital assessment tool developed by TAFE NSW to evaluate literacy and numeracy skills. The tool is designed to help students identify their strengths and growth areas while guiding them towards suitable TAFE courses and support options.
The event concluded with a short lunch and certificate presentations, acknowledging the students’ participation and enthusiasm.
‘I Love Maths Day’ was not only informative but inspiring, showing students how mathematical thinking is a vital part of many industries. A huge thank you goes to the organisers, workshop facilitators, and our dedicated staff for making this valuable experience possible.
We look forward to taking part again next year.
