Child Safety

At St John’s, we implement Child Safety Standards 7 and 8 in alignment with our strong commitment to the safety, wellbeing, and inclusion of all children. Here’s how we address these standards:

Child Safety Standard 7: Strategies to Promote the Participation and Empowerment of Children

We actively work to create a school environment where children feel safe, heard, and valued. Implementation includes:

Student Voice and Agency

  • Students are encouraged to express their views, ask questions, and raise concerns through regular class meetings, suggestion boxes, and SRC (Student Representative Council).
  • Opportunities for student leadership are promoted to build confidence and responsibility.

Child-Friendly Policies

  • Child Safety information is shared in student-friendly language and on Better Buddy Days.
  • Classroom charters and rights-based displays help students understand acceptable and respectful behaviour.

Empowerment through Curriculum

  • Our curriculum includes protective behaviours education (e.g.,  Respectful Relationships, Cyber Safety, Better Buddy day curriculum).
  • Students learn to identify unsafe situations, understand their rights, and know who to talk to if they feel unsafe.

Safe and Supportive Relationships

  • Staff intentionally build trusting relationships with students.
  • Staff use inclusive and supportive language and model respectful interactions.

Child Safety Standard 8: Physical and Online Environments Promote Safety and Wellbeing

We provide safe learning environments both physically and digitally.

Physical Environment

  • Classrooms and playgrounds are regularly monitored and risk-assessed.
  • Visibility is prioritised in spaces where children are present (e.g., no closed-door meetings without visibility).
  • OH&S and maintenance processes ensure all areas are kept safe.

Online Safety

  • Digital technology use is guided by our ICT Acceptable Use Policy and Cyber Safety agreements.
  • Students are taught digital citizenship and how to protect themselves online.
  • Online platforms are monitored, with filters and cybersecurity measures in place.

Supervision and Risk Management

  • Clear expectations for supervision of students during learning, breaks, excursions, and online learning.
  • Risk assessments are completed for off-site activities and events.

Ongoing Review and Staff Commitment

  • Staff receive professional learning and updates on child safety responsibilities.
  • We regularly review our practices and engage with the school community (including students and families) for feedback and continuous improvement.
