Kids Corner

The Kids Corner section of this fortnight’s newsletter features Prisha and Radinsa’s (both in Year 5) recounts from their recent excursion to the Cranbourne Botanical Gardens. I trust you enjoy them just as much as I have:
Cranbourne Botanical Gardens – Prisha.
Yesterday, I was fascinated there are many, many living organisms that live under the water. Not just fish, but glass shrimp and particles. For flora, I learnt that there is this plant called the Lemon Myrtle plant. The leaf has this lemon/lime scent. There is a plant which is the cousin of the Bottle-Brush called Banksia.
The Banksia from far away, kind of looked like corn. Then there is the Mistletoe bird that eats the berry from the Mistletoe plant and poops it to the other tree. This regenerating process helps spread the mistletoe.
For fauna, I learnt that Koalas don’t get enough nutrition from eucalyptus leaves so they spend most of their day sleeping and resting.
I was amazed that the neighbouring houses have to keep their pets inside because their cats may hunt the bandicoots and other animals.
Future Decisions
I care about the environment and its future, whether I have kids or not, I will start a petition and lobby that the environment needs to be more cared for. For the people that care, we can decide to convince others to make a better future. As Greta Thunberg said,
“The world is waking up and change is coming whether you like it or not!”
Cranbourne Botanical Gardens – Radinsa.
During the excursion I learnt a lot of interesting facts and opinions. Flora and Fauna has a huge impact on our community, country and world. We learnt that some native animals to Australia are endangered and need to be recognised by many people. Such as koalas, they eat leaves on gum trees and these only. If we recklessly cut down gum trees, koalas will become extinct.
Did you know that there is a special tree called the Lemon Myrtle that can be turned into tea and can be a deodorant or air-freshener? Lemon Myrtle trees can easily be added to hot water and it creates a dazzling tea with the scent of lemon.
Future decisions:
In the future, whether I have kids or not, I want to have an impact on the community. There may be reckless people, but thousands of people and I with the warmest hearts, will make a change. We will lobby and will explain why it’s so bad to cause problems with nature. We have to convince people that’s it’s not Ok!
As Greta Thunberg said,
“The world is waking up and change is coming whether you like it or not!”
Wow, Radinsa and Prisha, it is quite obvious that you learnt a great deal from the excursion, and it has sparked a commitment to ensure you do whatever you can, to protect the environment – well done as this is a very, very important issue for many generations to come!
