This term in Inquiry, 3A has been learning all about how living things depend on each other. We started with a big question: “How are living things dependent on each other?” We’ve been exploring the connections between animals, plants, and their environments. We discovered that when people cut down trees, it affects the homes of animals which is called deforestation.
At first, we didn’t know much about deforestation. Now we know it means land clearing and it can really hurt the environment. It doesn't just happen in Australia, it happens all over the world, including the Amazon Rainforest. We’ve learned that animals can become endangered or extinct if they lose their homes.
In 3A, we’ve done lots of hands-on learning activities. One of our favourites was making flapbooks about deforestation and how it affects animals. We also researched Australian native animals that are endangered and made a diorama and written pieces about them. Some of the things we’ve learned include:
Here are some of the things students in 3A have said about what they’ve learned:
“Deforestation is when people cut down trees to build things like houses or swimming pools.” – Max S
“When people cut down trees, animals have nowhere to go. They lose their homes.” – Thenura
“If animals lose their homes, they can become extinct.” – Oliver
“People should plant more trees to help animals and nature.” – Dua
“We should only cut branches, not whole trees.” – Ray
“Animals need homes just like humans do.” – Ameliya
“I’ve learned that habitat loss is a big problem.” – Ninda
“I now know that deforestation is clearing land and that it’s bad for animals.” – Amaira
“If people keep cutting trees, animals will keep losing their homes.” – Karl
“I’ve learned that palm oil is a reason why animals can become endangered.” – Max Z
We are also really excited to visit CERES Community Environment Park for our excursion. We can’t wait to learn more about how animals and plants are all connected. We’ll get to do hands-on activities, look at different kinds of plants, and find out how to protect habitats. It will help us understand even more about how we can take care of our environment.
Thanks for reading! We hope you enjoyed learning about our Inquiry unit as much as we did!
