Serving Family

How do you define ‘service’? I’m thinking it has a lot to do with looking out for others... looking after them, caring for them, helping through words and actions.

Through the next few weeks in Wednesday Worship, we will be exploring this very thing. Today we began in our immediate sphere of influence... serving people in our family.

Are there any examples of this in the bible? Yes!

Moses is one of the great leaders in Old Testament times. God chose him to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt (where they had become slaves) through to the Promised land. He also had an older brother and sister.

He was born at an exceedingly dangerous time... when the Pharoah was trying to reduce the population of the Israelites. Miriam, Moses’ sister watched over her baby brother as he lay hidden in the reeds of the river. When he was found by an Egyptian princess, who wanted to bring him home with her, she bravely stepped forward and suggested that her mother be his nurse... which is exactly what happened.

Many years later, when God was telling Moses of his plan to rescue the Israelites, and Moses’ role in it, he felt overwhelmed. Aaron, Moses’ brother, went with him. Together, with God’s help, they met the challenge of facing Pharoah with the God’s directive to ‘Let His people go’. (Moses’ adventures are in the bible. Check out p75 to 102 in the Candle Bible for Kids for details... Or you can read from Exodus chapter 2 in any bible...)

Miriam was known as a singer/ songwriter and prophetess. Aaron became the High Priest and Moses was the leader. Like in any family, these siblings weren’t perfect... There are stories of mistakes, jealousy even, but there are also stories of how they served each other and showed love and care.

When our students were asked how they could serve people in their family, they came up with all sorts of ideas.

Unpacking the dishwasher, looking after people in their family who are sick, making a cup of coffee, helping to prepare meals for the family, cleaning without being asked... All great ideas... (Great ideas are one thing, putting them into action is even better!)

We were left to ponder: How can you serve your family (sharing love, care and kindness) through your words and actions today?

I’ll leave this one for you to talk over with your family...  Then see how the effects of serving others can make a difference and be a blessing to everyone!
