The Term continues to be full of varied learning and sporting activities. Last week students from Year 11 and 12 took part in the West Coast Fever Cup competition (more information below) and this week the Year 11 students will be heading down to the Royal Perth hospital for the Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth (P.A.R.T.Y.) program. Year 12 ATAR students took part in the annual Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) camp, learning about the many agricultural industries and their impact on local and global markets. In the background, we are busy planning for the Year 11 ATAR camp, which promises to be just as good.
In our general courses, Year 12 students have been busy preparing for the Externally Set Task (EST) tests. Well done to all students for their efforts. Year 11 have been writing 'Heywire' style autobiographies in English, using formulas to work out volume and mass in Maths and in Plant and Animal students are working on fertiliser experiments and Animal health.

The 12 Plant general class has been busy prepping for their ESTs and monitoring their seeding depth trial. In the seeding depth trial, the students are investigating the optimal sowing depth for canola, lupins wheat and barley. For the next term, they will look at how seeding depth has affected the germination and plant development of their crops.

In week 2, the ATAR students attended an industry and university camp in Perth. On the first day they visited Westcoast Wools, who are a wool broker and exporter; the Australia Wool Testing Authority, who sample the quality of wool to ensure it is graded and sold at the appropriate value; and finally, University of WA (UWA) where the students learnt about life on campus and the courses that are available. On the second day, the students visited Cooperative Bulk Handling (CBH) Group at the Kwinana port and learnt about the operations and development of the cooperation from grain storage to global marketing and processing. We followed-up that tour with a visit to Shade River Dairy, where the students learnt about the management practices that are implemented to produce high quality milk at quantity. On the last day, the students visited Linley Valley Pork to witness the processing of pigs in a commercial abattoir and Department of Agriculture and Food WA (DAFWA) in Northam to learn about current cropping research and career opportunities.
The 11 ATAR class has been busy conducting a salinity trial to investigate the salt tolerance of wheat, lupins, barley and field peas. They are testing the tolerance of the crops at 2.5g/l (sensitive) 5g/l (moderate tolerant) and 10g/l (highly tolerant) salt concentrations. Over the course of the trial, they are measuring the germination, height, and weight of the plants to compare their plant health and performance response to the levels of salinity.

The College competed in the West Coast Fever Netball Cup last week in Northam. The 48 students displayed great skill and sportsmanship throughout the day, with all teams coming away with multiple wins. A huge thank you to Mr Lee, Mr Evans, Miss Strong and Miss Hill for coaching the 4 teams. There was a massive effort from our students to play 5 games of netball. A special thank you to the parents
that came and supported and umpired.
