Year 11 Drama – Nepean Nexus

In Term 2, Year 11 Drama were honoured to be selected to be part of the Nepean Nexus Theatre Festival at the Q Theatre. Over 5 weeks they worked with an upcoming early career industry professional to create a new work to be performed on the professional stage at The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.  The Q states that Nepean Nexus showcased “next generation storytelling powered by next level innovation and technology.”

Year 11’s work ‘Adrift’ was a truly sophisticated performance exploring the concept of feeling disconnected in our increasingly technology connected world. Using physical theatre, movement, song, and dialogue in 8 different languages, they told personal stories of their own experiences feeling adrift. Through the metaphor of (and physical creation of) Paper Boats floating, they were able to create connection between themselves and their audience.

In a moment of true theatrical bravery the performance ended with students leaving the stage via the audience, each handing a paper boat to an audience member as the lights came up inviting the audience to become part of both their performance and their connected world, Year 11 left the stage quietly, without fanfare, without the expectation of applause. Each of those boats had a personal message of hope and joy written on it. Their demonstration of powerful storytelling through silence and stillness was emotionally moving to the audience.

Year 11 were outstanding ambassadors for our school for the day, across two shows and in our time in the community.
