English
Reading and Viewing
This term, we will continue with our weekly reading focus. In guided practice groups, the students will use texts to work on vocabulary, comprehension strategies and reading fluency.
Writing
This term, students will focus on historical narratives with an inquiry lens. We will examine the various structures and language features characteristic of the text type. We will continue with our weekly spelling focus and different areas of grammar.
Speaking and Listening
The students will be given opportunities to listen and contribute to conversations and discussions, to share information and ideas. In collaborative groups, students will also plan and deliver short presentations on given topics. Students will be required to be active listeners and respectful speakers when working in small groups.
Mathematics
In Year 4, students will build upon their existing knowledge to enhance their mathematical understanding and problem-solving skills. In Multiplication and Division, students develop efficient strategies for solving multiplication and division problems, including using known facts and understanding the relationship between division. In Fractions and Decimals, students will explore fractions such as halves, quarters, thirds, fifths, and tenths, and learn to identify and compare equivalent fractions and use decimal notation. Within Geometry, students will classify angles as equal to, greater than, or less than a right angle, and compare the areas of regular and irregular shapes using informal units. In Measurement, students will use instruments to measure and compare lengths, masses, capacities, and temperatures, and solve problems involving time duration. Within Location and Mapping, students will interpret information contained in basic maps, using simple scales, legends, and directions to describe positions and pathways.
This term in Year 3 Mathematics, students will build their skills in Multiplication and Division by using a range of strategies to solve practical problems and recalling facts for the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables. They will also develop their understanding of Addition and Subtraction through activities involving money, including representing and calculating values in different ways. In Geometry, students will explore angles by identifying them as measures of turn and comparing them to right angles, and they will investigate 3D shapes by making, comparing and classifying them based on key features. In Measurement, they will learn to tell time to the nearest minute on both analogue and digital clocks, while deepening their understanding of the relationship between hours and minutes.
Wellbeing - Help Seeking
This term, students will be learning about the importance of asking for help and how to do it in a safe and confident way. These are valuable life skills that support their well-being now and as they grow older. Students will participate in ‘Inform and Empower’ sessions, they will also talk about what it means to stand up for others in a kind and respectful way, and explore who they can go to for help when they need it.
Inquiry - What's the Story
In this unit, students will learn about Australia’s history by exploring different ways stories are told, through music, dance, art, drama, poems, and writing. They will learn that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are the oldest living cultures in the world. Students will also learn about Australian History including the First Settlers and their journey.
Religion
This term, students will be learning about parables, a special type of story found in the Bible that teaches important lessons. They will explore where these stories are found in Scripture and learn how to understand their deeper meaning. Students will also reflect on how these parables help us understand what the Kingdom of God is like and how we are called to live. They will also explore Indigenous Law and Lore, making comparisons to the Ten Commandments. The Year 3 students will be preparing for their Sacrament of Reconciliation this term.
