Buckley House Classroom

Global Leaders Opportunity

Aya Mohammed & Ava Sun, Year 6, Buckley House

“The Global Leader program is a great opportunity for students from Years 1 - 5 to demonstrate their leadership skills and have a say in the goings-on of the school. Students present a speech to their class, explaining their vision for Buckley House and sharing the leadership qualities they possess. They are democratically elected by their classes and are recognised for their leadership in a special badging ceremony. Global Leaders then work collaboratively with the Global Captains across the semester to make improvements to our school. It is really wonderful to see how students make such an amazing impact here at Buckley House!” – Ms. Cowie

Ms. Cowie is the head of our French primary years and has taken the role after Mr Kenemun of global initiatives. She has kindly shared an insight of what the global leaders do.

Year 4, 5, and 6 Technology Inquiry Unit

Kimi Ye, Year 6, Buckley House

In Term 3 inquiry, Years 4, 5 and 6 have been centralised around the theme: Digital Change Makers. They have learnt about many topics, but overall, there has been a large focus on AI.

In Year 4, students have been having introductory lessons about AI. This has let them learn more about different types of AI and how it can be used to help expand their knowledge, particularly the effects of unsafe AI usage. They have learnt about how AI such as the popular ‘ChatGPT’ gathers information from the internet.

Meanwhile in Year 5, they have been diving deep into AI generalisation. This has allowed them to think more deeply about how AI can make mistakes and have inaccuracies. This was supported by a whole school incursion, where all of Buckley House was educated deeply about AI. The incursion helped students understand concepts such as the several types of AI and what each of their purposes are. They learnt about the open ‘sea of data’ on the internet and the inaccuracies of AI.

“In term three we learnt about AI. This was because we got to learn how AI generalises true things, and false things. AI is an interesting topic as you can learn how AI learns and is developed. Overall term three inquiry was incredibly fun.” -Jayden Wang Year 5

Year 6 has been delving in topics such as how to safely use AI and wether it should be allowed. Some of the things they learnt includes AI bias and how to prevent it, how AI is developed and created the history of AI and the effects of AI on the future of society. They have also heard multiple talks preaching about how to teach AI through instructing it to do specific tasks. They have thought deeply about the advantages and disadvantages of AI in the future with development of society.

“Inquiry has been a fun and engaging experience teaching me all about AI. It has taught me the benefits and problems of AI.” -Edward Nation Year 6

Term 3’s technology unit has been well received by all students as it allowed them to build their knowledge and interest. As artificial intelligence becomes more advanced and integrated into our society, it is important for us to learn about the benefits, risks and uses of AI.
