Principal's Report

Tim Bernau | Principal

Dear Skye Families,

Celebrating Our NAPLAN Growth and Achievement

We're delighted to share the outcomes of our 2025 NAPLAN assessments, which demonstrate the continued progress and dedication of our students, teachers, and families working together.

Our Year 3 students have shown impressive growth across multiple areas. Most notably, we've seen significant improvements in Writing, Spelling, Numeracy, and Grammar & Punctuation. Our results consistently match or exceed similar schools, network schools, and state benchmarks across all assessed areas.

In Reading and Writing, our Year 3 students continue to perform at high levels, maintaining strong results that reflect our commitment to the Science of Reading and subsequent structured literacy approach. The consistency of these outcomes shows the effectiveness of our teaching approaches and the engagement of our learning community.

Our Year 5 cohort has demonstrated solid progress, particularly in Reading and Spelling, where we've seen positive growth from the previous year. These students continue to perform competitively when compared to similar schools, network schools, and state averages. While some areas show the natural fluctuations that occur with different student cohorts, our teachers are using these insights to further refine their teaching strategies and provide targeted support where needed.

These results reflect not just academic achievement, but the collaborative effort of our entire school community. We're particularly proud that our results demonstrate we're meeting and often exceeding the performance of schools with similar demographics, showing that our inclusive, supportive approach to education is delivering strong outcomes for all students.

Strengthening Our School Community - Bullying Prevention Focus

This term, we're taking a proactive approach to student safety and wellbeing by enhancing our bullying prevention efforts across the school. We're encouraged by recent Student Attitudes to School Survey data, which shows significant improvements in how students perceive our school's ability to manage bullying and maintain safety.

Under the leadership of our Wellbeing Assistant Principal, Kim Weissenburger, we're beginning this important work by ensuring everyone understands the difference between bullying and other social conflicts that naturally occur in childhood. This clarity helps us respond appropriately to different situations and teach students the right strategies for each circumstance.

As part of this initiative, families will soon receive a short survey asking for your perspectives on student wellbeing at Skye Primary. Your voice matters in shaping how we continue to support all students.

Visit the Wellbeing section of this newsletter for detailed information about bullying prevention, practical resources for families, and strategies to support your children at home. We'll be sharing regular updates about our prevention programs and how students can contribute to our positive school culture.

Curriculum Day Reminder

Friday 8th August is a Pupil Free Day. Our entire staff will be participating in the final day of the Berry Street Education Model as we continue to embed trauma-informed positive education practices across the school. This session focuses on 'Character'—helping students understand and utilise their personal strengths and values to enhance their learning and future pathways.

Parent Carpark Safety

Over the weekend, we'll be installing a zebra crossing in the parent carpark to provide a designated safe crossing path for families. This will be supported by our dedicated Kiss and Go team. A Sentral note will be sent once complete, and we ask for your cooperation to ensure its success.

Have a great fortnight!

Warm regards,

Tim
