What's happening in our classroom?

Literacy

This term we will be exploring a non-fiction unit of learning in Literacy titled, Into the Unknown. This unit of learning will focus on Australian History and more specifically, early explorers. We will be learning about what motivated people to explore and who some of the important explorers were. Students will learn about the importance of trade during this time period and the settlement of Australia as a penal colony. Through this lense students will be learning new vocab, practising their fluency and developing their comprehension skills by reading and discussing non-fiction texts.

Numeracy

To begin this term we will be beginning a unit focusing on addition and subtraction. This unit of learning will build upon prior knowledge and skills covered earlier in the year. Students will be learning how to use fact families to complete addition and equations and find unknown numbers. This involves rewriting subtraction equations as addition and using strategies to find the difference between two numbers. Finally as part of this unit of learning students will be exploring how to create equivalent addition number sequences.

This term we will also be spending time exploring angles as part of our maths learning. This will involve students learning how to name angles and classify them as acute, obtuse, right, straight and reflex.

    Inquiry

This term our Inquiry unit is called, Types of Forces. This unit will involve students learning about different types of forces and how they are exerted.

Some essential questions from this unit include:

  • What are some samples of forces?

  • How can we harness the power of the wind?

  • What is friction and how is it used in everyday objects?

  • What is magnetism and how is it used in everyday objects?
