Year 9 and 10 Drama

Fairytale Characters Galore

With MECS students busily rehearsing ‘Shrek the Musical’ and Year 9/10 Drama students working on ‘Fairytale High’, there has been an abundance of fairytale characters in our midst.

The Year 9/10 Drama class recently presented scenes from the comedy, ‘Fairytale High’ as part of their Semester 1 Unit, Character and Scripted Drama.

The play was an exercise in characterisation and performance skills, with each cast member required to perform two roles. It also served as an example of satire for the audience of Year 8 students, who learn about comedy styles in Drama and perform their own comic versions of fairytales.

As the title suggests, the play is set in a secondary school for fairytale characters where the Giant (from Jack and the Beanstalk) is the Assistant Principal, Snow White is the Food Tech teacher and The Wicked Queen is the school counsellor, in competition with Miss White for the title of Teacher of the Year! There are students like Happy the Dwarf the teacher’s pet, Pinocchio who keeps telling lies, Peter Pan who keeps repeating Year 10, and his mate, Jack who steals the Giant’s gold pen. Instead of a magic mirror, The Wicked Queen has a magic laptop, and instead of marrying the conceited Prince, Snow White defeats The Wicked Queen on her own, declaring that she doesn’t need a man to save her! And they all live happily ever after… well, some of them, anyway!

The play was a challenge for a small cast but lots of fun for both the performers and the audience. Congratulations everyone!
