Year 9 Hike

Burkes Lookout

In Year 9 students begun Term 3 learning about neuroplasticity, growing and re-wiring their brains by doing challenging things, and then putting that knowledge to the test by hiking to Burkes Lookout – which had some very steep trails, but how incredible is the view?!

At the top we briefly discussed the basic fact that there will be struggles that happens in everyday life, and that instead of trying to avoid or run away from them, they present opportunities for personal growth and new experiences. We used positive self-talk and perspective taking to tell ourselves, “I can do this”, “just to the next big tree then we’ll take a break”, “I’m more than halfway, I got this far, I can make it”.

We noticed that some people would park near the top and only walk a short way to Burkes Lookout, and we chatted about how we might have a different perspective or appreciation for the view as we had to endure and work hard to get there. We knew exactly what it took to get to the top and perhaps shortcuts rob us of the satisfaction of choosing to push through tough times as well as the opportunity to grow as we step out of our comfort zone.

Some of the most valuable achievements in life are the ones that require endurance and a strong mindset.
