A Spotlight on Learning

A Spotlight on Learning in the MLC on Heights Campus
Students in the MLC settled well into routines in Term 3, and engaged enthusiastically in their learning after a busy, yet productive Term 2. Their positive attitude and growing sense of responsibility contributed to a supportive and collaborative classroom environment.
In Reading, students have been working on developing their skills in visualising and making inferences. They used their schema (prior knowledge) together with text clues to create detailed mental images and thoughtful inferences. They then moved into using text clues to analyse characters, explaining what characters might have been thinking or feeling and justifying their ideas with evidence from the text.
Building on these skills, in Writing students are creating imaginative texts, focusing on crafting sizzling starts to hook the reader. Drawing on what they had learned about analysing characters, they used descriptive language and engaging details to bring their characters to life and capture the reader’s attention from the very beginning.
In Mathematics, students strengthened their understanding of the connection between addition and subtraction and applied this knowledge to solve problems. They practised using a variety of strategies to improve their accuracy and fluency, building a strong foundation for future learning when we start written algorithms for addition and subtraction.
Through Projects, students are investigating Geography. They gathered information about places in their local area and represented their findings on maps and drawings. They used symbols and labels to show the features that made up their community, developing their mapping and geography skills in meaningful contexts. This will also cross over into Mathematics when we start Location and Mapping.
Alongside their academic learning, students continued to model the expected behaviours outlined in our School Wide Positive Behaviours framework, with a particular focus on Collaboration. Their efforts in working together respectfully and responsibly were commendable and helped create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
