This term in Wellbeing, our Year 6 students will be engaging in a thoughtful and age-appropriate unit focused on gender norms, respectful relationships, and empathy. These are essential areas of learning as our students continue to develop their understanding of themselves, others, and the world around them — particularly as they prepare for the transition to secondary school.

Each week, students will take part in a Wellbeing lesson where we will explore topics such as:

  • What gender norms are and how they influence the way we think, behave, and relate to others
  • What it means to show empathy and how we can better understand different perspectives
  • How to recognise respectful and disrespectful behaviours in relationships, both in-person and online
  • How to resolve conflict respectfully and communicate in ways that strengthen relationships

In addition to these lessons, we will use Circle Time — a structured class discussion format — to encourage open conversations, active listening, and deeper reflection on the week’s themes. This approach allows students to connect their learning to real-life situations and share their thoughts in a safe and supportive space.

We will be drawing from a number of high-quality, evidence-based resources including the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) curriculum developed by the Victorian Government, and Visible Wellbeing strategies that focus on building student awareness and mental wellbeing. We will also incorporate age-appropriate videos, picture books, and discussion prompts to help students explore these concepts in engaging and relatable ways.
