Writing: In Term 3, our Year 6 students will be exploring the art of short story writing. They’ll begin by brainstorming creative ideas and planning their narratives, focusing on key elements like plot, character, setting, and theme. Using engaging mentor texts, students will learn how to build tension, vary sentence structure, and write authentic dialogue. Throughout the term, they’ll draft, revise, and publish their own short stories, showcasing their growth as writers. The unit ends with a class celebration where students share their stories and reflect on their progress. This unit supports creativity, critical thinking, and writing skills in preparation for Year 7.

Reading: This term, Year 6 students will explore a range of short stories by well-known authors and former students. Through weekly Literature Circles, they’ll work in small groups to discuss and analyse texts, focusing on plot, theme, character and setting. These reading sessions will also support their own short story writing, helping them understand how authors craft engaging stories. The program builds deep thinking, teamwork, and a love of reading.
