Grade 1 Community News

Hello Grade 1 Families,

It’s hard to believe we're nearing the end of the year! We’ve had a wonderful time with our Grade 1 students and are incredibly proud of their achievements. We’re wrapping up our final units, and the students have been fully engaged and enjoying every moment.

In Reading, we’ve been learning about animals and their habitats. We’ve focused on the animals of the Deciduous Forest, the Tropical Rainforest, and Freshwater habitats. Students have been using this knowledge to support their information report writing. They have enjoyed being able to draw and label pictures of their chosen animals.

In Writing, students have been practicing the process of creating Informative Texts. They’ve been drafting, editing, and revising their reports on their chosen animals, and they’re excited to share all the fascinating facts they’ve discovered! We are so proud of all students and how far they have all come with their writing.

In Maths, we’ve just finished a unit on time. Students learnt about the days of the week, months of the year, durations, and telling time to the half-hour. They enjoyed connecting this unit to their daily lives.

In Vocabulary, we explored new words from our serial text, Matilda. The words we focused on were petrified, hesitated, cautiously, and gripping. Students participated in a range of activities to deepen their understanding of these words. In Morphology, we examined the suffix -ly. Students learned how to add -ly to base words and how this changes their meaning. It’s fantastic to see students incorporating their newly learned vocabulary and the suffix into their writing!
